This Is Why You Shouldn’t Worry If Your Baby Isn’t Sleeping Through The Night

During those early stages of motherhood, just about every new parent prays that their newborn turns out to be a good sleeper. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. While those sleepless nights with a new born baby might prove to be incredibly challenging, there’s a new report that suggests it might not be a bad thing after all.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, newborns aren’t crying throughout the night because they want to test your ability to multi-task at four in the morning, or worse, stress you out. They are also not screaming at the top of their lungs because they want to stretch out their vocal cords in the most annoying way possible. Instead, they want to be held, comforted, and have as much skin-to-skin contact with their mother.

Researchers and health professionals say that the mother and baby contact during those early and crucial first few months is important because it helps produce oxytocin. That’s the hormone that encourages bonding and breast milk production. It also reduces stress levels in both the mother and the baby.

When a mother is having skin-to-skin contact with her child, her body temperature naturally adjusts in order to regular that of her newborn child. Spending quality time with your baby during all hours of the night also helps with mutual regulation. In other words, whenever a baby comes into close contact with a mother, he or she develops a steadier breathing pattern.

That’s also the reason why so many doctors and health professionals suggest that babies sleep in the same bedroom as their parents for at least the first six months of their lives. It’s been noted that the risk of sudden infant death syndrome and unexpected death in infancy is the highest up until the age of six months.

As difficult, stressful and even tiresome as it may feel, nurturing your baby during an all-nighter is actually helping you bond in many different ways. And while having a child who naturally sleeps for long stretches at a time can feel like a blessing, staying up with a baby that is wide awake and alert isn’t the worst thing in the world, either.
