Avengers: Endgame did not leave us with all of Earth’s mightiest heroes alive and well by the time it was done, as Black Widow and Iron Man bowed out out rather tragically. But there was a bit of respite in the form of Captain America getting to live out his life with Peggy Carter after Thanos was defeated.
It’s assumed that most Marvel fans were sympathetic towards Steve Rogers due to the fact that he wasn’t available to grow old with Peggy as he was basically frozen in time. But, following Endgame‘s battles, he dropped Infinity Stones and Thor’s hammer off in their respective timelines and came back to the present day as an old man.
Cap told Sam Wilson he’d lived a beautiful life and, judging by the warm smile on his face, he must have been telling the truth. But we were left to guess how old he was – that is until now.
According to the movie’s visual effects producer Jen Underdahl, Rogers was 106 years old when he came back.
Underdahl spoke to WIRED in an interview, detailing the film’s remarkable visual effects and explaining how Chris Evans was made to look like an elderly man. The process involved digitally shrinking the 38-year-old’s neck, shoulders and overall profile. An older body double was also used to perform the same scene in order to get “that 106-year-old super soldier look,” according to the visual effects producer.
To delve a bit deeper, Rogers was born in 1918, which means he was 27 when he crashed in the Arctic Ocean in 1945. After being unfrozen at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, he continued aging normally and should have been 39 years old during the events of Endgame, which is set in 2023.
Endgame writer Stephen McFeely previously revealed that Rogers went back to Peggy in 1948 and spent 67 years with her, which takes us to 2015, close to when she died in Captain America: Civil War. It’s pretty safe to assume that Cap returned to 2023 to pass the shield on to Wilson through the use of what was left of his Pym Particles after burying Peggy.
McFeely’s writing partner Christopher Markus, as well as directors Joe and Anthony Russo, have all made claims to the contrary, saying that Cap’s time with Peggy was spent in an alternate timeline before he returned to the main timeline. In any case, Rogers seemed to age pretty well – which should probably be the case when you get to spend most of your life with someone you love.
Sadly, though, Evans has retired from his role as Captain America. But there is hope he could return sometime in the future.
