Once previously unheard of, standing desks seem to be a huge deal for a lot of people who work a desk job of some sorts. The main reason for this is because how so many health experts have said that they’re beneficial to those who use them. Sure, they’re also really cool and modern-looking; but they boasted about health benefits are mostly why they’ve become so popular. But as it turns out now, that may not be the truth after all.
As reported by Men’s Health, experts explain that newer studies have recently come out to counter the previous beliefs that had expressed the benefits of standing desks.
While it’s well-known that sitting all day is bad for your back, so is standing all day. If you sit at your desk all day, you run the risk of bulging disks. But if you stand all day instead, you still put a considerable amount of stress on your back. There’s also the fact that those who sit a lot tend to have more health issues that are longer lasting. This includes (but is not limited to) poor cardiovascular health, weight gain, and even a shorter lifespan.
So now that you’re armed with this information, what should you do now? Well, you don’t necessarily need to ditch the idea of a standing desk altogether. The wisest thing you can do is change positions every 20 to 30 minutes. Alternating from standing to sitting, and even walking and stretching will keep your blood flowing. Getting a good workout in prior to your workday—even if it’s something simple like a bike ride or a hike—can also help keep you healthy.
Now it’s easy to understand why a standing desk may not be better for you than a sitting desk. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t get a standing desk at all; just remember that it may not be the best choice for you. Do a lot of research before you decide which one is right for you.
