10. Baby And Me 2: Prenatal Vitamins

We know that prenatal vitamins are important, but what if you follow a vegan diet?

Vegan food blogger and cookbook author, Ashley Melillo, from Blissful Basil wrote a post about the Baby & Me 2: prenatal vitamins she took during her pregnancy.

She wrote that this supplement has choline in it, which is one reason why she chose it. “Choline supports the healthy development of the baby, and is necessary for optimal health of both the nervous system and endocrine system,” she says. “As a vegan, it can be incredibly challenging to meet the recommended daily intake for Choline in general but especially during pregnancy. Rather than fret about it, I specifically sought out a prenatal that contained Choline to ensure I had a solid base of the nutrient coming in each day.”

9. Nature’s Bounty B-12

B-12 is a crucial nutrient that we often hear that vegans should supplement with because a lack of B-12 can lead to anemia and other health problems. Pregnant women who follow a vegan lifestyle can also take B-12 supplements during this time, and Nature’s Bounty B-12 is a good one (whether you’re pregnant or not).

Alex Jones wrote in a post for Raise Vegan, saying, “This is an absolute necessity for vegans. I recommend taking cyanocobalamin, which is perfectly safe during pregnancy. These, in particular, have 1000 mcg so I recommend taking one tablet 2-3 times per week.”

8. Garden For Life: Organic Plant Calcium

Moms are always a great resource since we can learn from their experiences and hear what worked for them during their pregnancy. Blogger Angela Liddon from Oh She Glows recommends Garden for Life: Vitamin Code Raw Calcium (but they also have organic plant calcium, as pictured). During her pregnancy, it was a popular vegan supplement she implemented in her food plan.

She wrote, “A calcium supplement is necessary for me because the Baby & Me supplement only has 75mg of calcium. My body seems to digest these fine, but I don’t like that each pill only has 150mg calcium each. So I’m taking about four-five per day and getting the rest from my diet.”

7. NOW: Kelp

Iodine is another thing that we need, especially during pregnancy. According to Baby Center, eggs and dairy products are among the list of foods that have iodine. Since vegans won’t be consuming those foods, we need to find a supplement.

This supplement brand, NOW: Kelp is one of the best vegan pregnancy supplements out there since it supplies the soon-to-be mama with iodine.

Alex Jones of Raise Vegan recommends this brand: “During pregnancy, we need about 150 mcg of iodine per day and this is easily doable with sea vegetables. Although, this may not be an option for some. In that case, I would suggest taking these supplements, or something similar.”

6. Garden Of Life: MyKind Organics Once Daily

Many of us might take a multivitamin even when we’re not pregnant, and it’s a good idea to continue this habit during pregnancy. Finding a brand that is vegan is important, and Michelle Weinhofen, a yoga guru, recommends Garden of Life. It’s a multivitamin but also contains vitamin-B, which she notes is really crucial during this time.

She writes, “The entire range of B vitamins play an important role in your health and strength while the baby is developing. It helps with baby/s development and it can aid in certain pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness (B6).”

Everyone could use less morning sickness, so why not give this a try?

5. Diet Standards: Prenatal DHA

Why would a pregnant woman take a DHA supplement? Because of Omega-3 fatty acids, which American Pregnancy says is good for “both the development of a healthy baby and in the health of the mother.” According to the site, DHA is crucial for the body’s central nervous system.

According to Happy Happy Vegan, “Diet Standards Prenatal DHA is a good contender for an add-on supplement to take in addition to your normal prenatal vitamin. Three gel caps contain 825 mg of Omega-3 including 450 from plant-derived DHA. Though most supplemental DHA is made from fish, Diet Standards Prenatal DHA is derived from algae.” The site continues to say “Not only is this vegan-approved, algae DHA tends to contain less mercury than similar products made from fish.”

4. Country Life: Magnesium

Yogi and blogger, Michelle Weinhofen, also recommends this vegan brand of the magnesium supplement from Country Life.

She writes, “Calcium helps muscles contract and magnesium helps muscles relax. I recently learned in a nutrition course at my birthing center that the body is so smart it’ll do everything it can to feed and supply nutrients to the baby.” Weinhofen continues saying, “So that means that if baby needs more calcium or magnesium and momma isn’t taking in enough for both her and baby, the body will favor the baby leaving the mother potentially with symptoms like muscle cramps, yellowing teeth (due to calcium being extracted), etc. Being vegan I chose to get my calcium from a supplement in addition to my food, especially while pregnant.”
